Melasma & Skin Pigmentation

What Is Melasma & Skin Pigmentation?

Melasma & Skin Pigmentation are a common issue that takes on the form of brown to gray-brown patches. These can appear on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin and above the upper lip. They can also appear anywhere else on the body that is overexposed in the sun.

What Causes Melasma & Skin Pigmentation?

Though it is currently unclear what exactly causes melasma, it likely develops as a result of the color-making cells in the skin (melanocytes) overproducing too much color.

There are 3 major common melasma triggers:

  • Sun Exposure
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Skin Care Products

Women seem to be more prone to developing this condition. Only about 10% of those who have this condition are men. Hormones seem to trigger the condition, as it is incredibly common during pregnancy. Women with colored skin seem to be more prone to this condition developing due to the abundance of active melanocytes than those with light and fair skin.

It is likely that skin pigmentation & melasma occur when these melanocytes overproduce color. Lastly, some skin care products can cause sufficient irritation which can encourage the condition’s development.
