“Can vaginal rejuvenation be done after a hysterectomy?”

“Does it solve the issue of involuntary incontinence?”

“What symptoms does it address?”

“And can it make things worse?”

These are some of the many questions and concerns that were brought up by women on RealSelf. Dr. Lantry shares her expertise and provides answers to all of them in this post.

“Can The Viveve procedure be done after a recent hysterectomy? It’s been almost 12 weeks since I had a robotic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, which removed cervix, uterus and ovaries.”

Dr. Lantry: Yes, given that it has been almost 12 weeks since your hysterectomy you should have nothing to worry about.  The Viveve procedure focuses on outer layers of the vagina and does not treat areas closer to the cervix.  Just make sure to let your provider know beforehand.

“Hi! I am a 42 year old female, who never had children. I have had stress incontinence for past 5 years (at least). I saw my primary care, who referred me to an urologist. I really don’t want to go on medication. I am a non-smoker, at an ideal weight for my height, and I have tried muscle exercises. I have recently read up on Viveve Treatment. Would this work for me?”

Dr. Lantry: The body is a highly complex organism and, as a result, there are a variety of factors that could contribute to your symptoms of urinary incontinence. Over time, the muscles of the bladder that usually prevent urine from escaping begin to grow weak. As these muscles lose their strength, it is more common for unexpected and unwanted leakages to occur. Although age is a main factor contributing to UI, natural childbirth can also aggravate this condition. And lest you think you are the only one suffering, you should know you are not alone. Urinary incontinence impacts 17 percent of women over the age of 30, a third of women over the age of 45 and half of women over the age of 65.

“I don’t need anymore lubrication down there. I am afraid that Viveve will have even more lubricated because that’s one of the reasons why I feel I need a tightening due to too much wetness I lose the friction. And that’s what i don’t want. Can somebody help me?”

Dr. Lantry: If you already have healthy tissue producing a healthy amount of lubrication, Viveve treatments should not cause you to produce an excessive amount. Viveve works at the cellular level to rebuild and restore collagen to improve vaginal tone and health. For patients who struggle to produce lubrication, rejuvenating the tissue’s health would help create more lubrication. As you already appear to have healthy tissue, Viveve would increase vaginal tightness without significantly increasing the amount of lubrication.

That being said, there is no substitute for an in-person consultation with a certified medical professional to determine if Viveve is right for you.

“How does the Viveve vaginal rejuvenation procedure work and what symptoms does it treat?”

Dr. Lantry: Viveve works at the cellular level to rebuild and restore collagen. As it uses radio frequency to precisely target and heat deeper tissues, the device comes with a cooling tip, that ensures the entire procedure is both comfortable and pain-free.

The treatment can increase feelings of vaginal tightness and improve sexual satisfaction for most women.  Additionally, Viveve can help with mild to moderate urinary incontinence.  As a practicing OB/GYN, I cannot say how exciting it is to be able to provide patients with a non-surgical treatment with such wide-ranging benefits.

The treatment is not painful and takes about half an hour, while results can last longer than a year.

“I’m 29 years old I don’t have a problem with dryness. I’m naturally very wet & just want to get a slight tightening to feel more sensation and my boyfriend can feel more friction. Should i give Viveve a try? No vaginal birth and no kids.”

Dr. Lantry: The short answer is yes.  Viveve works at the cellular level to rebuild and restore collagen, as a result it can increase feelings of vaginal tightness and improve sexual satisfaction for most women.  As a non-surgical option, this treatment is less risky than surgical alternatives and the wide-ranging benefits are in no way limited to women who have given natural childbirth.

Given that information, there is no substitute for an in-person consultation with a certified medical professional to discuss if Viveve is right for you.
