Stretch Marks

What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are a result of the skin stretching or shrinking rapidly. Stretch marks are a type of scar that form due to the rupturing of collagen and elastin, which act as the main structuring blocks of the skin. As the skin tries healing, the condition starts to manifest.

Upon first appearing, the condition can appear as reddish-brown, purple, pink, red and dark brown depending on your skin color. With time, these stretch marks fade, but are still visible and can be felt by running the finger across them.

What Causes Stretch Marks?

There are several situations that can cause stretch marks. This condition can manifest as a result of:

  • Pregnancy
  • Quick fat loss or gain
  • Rapid growth during puberty
  • Rapid muscle growth from weight training
  • Hormone level fluctuation

How Are Stretch Marks Treated?

It is important to keep in mind that no single treatment works for everyone. Research shows that there is some benefit to using creams, lotions and gels. However, the application of these products has to be done as follows:

  • Using it on early stretch marks.
  • Massaging the product thoroughly into the stretch marks.
  • Applying the product every day for weeks.

Furthermore, some studies show that home remedies such as almond oil, olive oil, cocoa butter or vitamin E can help fade the condition and help reduce their visibility.

Like most scars, stretch marks are permanent. But with the right treatment, we can minimize the visibility of the scars and make them less noticeable.
